“Memories, with a little help from my friends.
Terry was assigned to the garden group. Being a bit fastidious that was quite appropriate. His first assignment was in Togoville, just outside of Anecho. Around a year later he then moved to Vogan. My friends and I recall he had pretty good success working with the various villages. He had signed up to serve another year. From my personal interactions with Terry here are some of those memories.
For some reason he decided to buy two puppies, one for him and one for me. While not expecting that, it turns out “ Chester” my dog was a perfect companion for the next two and one half years. Terry had knack of knowing one’s interest and likes and would engage with me and others in those things of interest.
Adventures: a small one where Terry Had to visit a village North of Vogan which required traveling thru a forest. It turned out to be a forest of Baobab trees, which were one of the most spectacular things I had seen Dark one moment and then streams of light floating down.
Adventure: A Big one. Terry was a great organizer, unlike Mike, John and myself, so after our two year stay we were able to time off and travel where ever. Terry organized which I considered a trip of a lifetime. Lorry to Ghana then Ivory Coast. A train ride to Upper Volta, where a huge gorilla was chained to a tree in the middle of Ougadouga. Back down to Accra where we flew into Morroco. Visited all four major cities and meet many interesting characters in the Kasbar. Then we flew over to the Canary Island, back to Dakkar, then home.
Adventure: unplanned. Terry and I had planned to fly back to the states together over the Holidays, going thru Paris. The Lebanese merchant in Tabligbo asked me if I would like to come visit him and his family in Beirut for a week. Terry had no problems with that so off we went. Like most areas where locals guide you around, we saw and visited some places that normal tourists may not get to. On leaving, Terry and I did spend a day in Paris. One of mt favorite photos was one I took of him with the Arc De Triomphe in the background.
Terry was a good PCV, and friend. I was deeply affective by his tragic accident. Peace. And for me my memorial song “here comes the sun, little darling” Here comes the son and I say It’s all right!!
